    .1) Wasif Ali Wasif remembered

    LAHORE: A seminar on the 14th anniversary of renowned Sufi writer and poet was held at Ewan-e-Iqbal on Wednesday. Justice (r) Mian Nazeer was the chief guest and Sahibzadah Kashif Mehmood presided over the seminar.

    Wasif Ali Wasif is famous for his unique literary style. He has written short prose on topics like life, fear, expectations, happiness.

    Dr Akram Chughtai, a close friend of Wasif, said it was not known when Wasif began writing. He said in early 1970s his poetry had appeared and that his first poetry book was Kiran Kiran Sooraj (every ray is a sun in itself) which was appreciated in literary circles. He said after the publication of the book, Wasif had begun writing in a newspaper. He said his articles were later compiled in a book form. He said his books include Dil Darya Samnadar (The heart as deep as ocean) and Qatra Qatra Qulzam (ocean in a drop and a drop in an ocean). He said his book Qatra Qatra Qulzam was also translated in English.

    Religious scholar Ahmad Javed said he had met Wasif only a few times. He said that observing silence was a quality of tasawuf and Wasif possessed the quality to express long phrases in short words. He said Wasif had tried to depict truth in his writings. He said his writings could help us in actualising ourselves. He said Wasif not only had written truth but he also spoke truth. He said, I consider Sufis an elite part of religion, if they excluded, religion will only be for ordinary people.

    .2) Wasif Ali Wasif’s Urs begins

    LAHORE: The eleventh Urs of Wasif Ali Wasif (a Sufi poet) started on Saturday on Bahawalpur Road.

    The president of PICIC Commercial Bank inaugurated the ceremony by laying a floral wreath at Wasif Ali Wasif’s tomb. A Mehfil-e-Naat was also held under the supervision of Local Government and Rural Development Secretary Najeebullah Malik, while Member of the National Assembly Sardar Nasarullah Dreshak and Local Government Director General Colonel (r) Shahbaz were chief guests. A large number of people attended the ceremony and paid tribute to the great Sufi poet.

    Wasif Ali Wasif was born on January 15, 1929 at Shah Pur Khushab. In 1949 he received an Award of Honor and on September 27, 1954, the West Pakistan Police Training certificate. He passed a Civil Service Examination in June 1954.

    He wrote many books like Dil Darya Sumender,Kiran Kiran Soraj (later translated into The Remaining Soul), Haraf Haraf Haqiqat, Katra Katra Kulzum and Shab-e-Chiragh.

    A seminar under the supervision of Justice (r) Zia Mehmood Mirza will also be held on Sunday (today) at Alhamrah Hall. Dr Muhammad Ajmal Khan Niazi will be the stage secretary of the seminar. Income Tax Regional Commissioner Qudrat Ullah and Bano Qudsia, a prominent writer, will be the chief guests.

    Mr Najeebullah Malik, Additional Education Secretary Dr Assadullah Baksh Malik and Mansoorur Rehman Khan Afridi will also address the seminar.Justice (r) Mian Nazeer Akhtar will participate in the concluding ceremony of the urs on Monday.

    .3) Seminar to commemorate Wasif Ali Wasif

    LAHORE: A seminar to commemorate the 13th death anniversary of Wasif Ali Wasif, a mystic intellectual and writer, will be held at the Alhamra Hall No 2 on August 29.
    Justice (r) KM Samdani will preside over the seminar and former Punjab chief minister Hanif Ramay will be the guest of honour.
    Bano Qudsia, Qayum Nizami, Iqbal Academy Director Sohail Omar, actor Mohammed Kawi Khan and Riaz Chaudhry will talk about Wasif’s works and thought.
    Wasif Ali Wasif has 30 books to his credit and his thought was more on mysticism, spirituality and humanity. His three-day anniversary celebrations will start tomorrow.
